Ben Carson’s Political Compass, According to On the Issues:
Ben Carson is classified as a Libertarian Conservative by On the Issues, meaning he believes in less government control on economic issues, but more control on social issues such as marijuana, LGBT rights, and immigration.
Dr. Ben Carson came from humble beginnings. He grew up in a poor household in Detroit, with not very many prospects, but he made the best of school, worked hard, and attended Yale University in 1969. After attending Yale, he was accepted into the University of Michigan School of Medicine. After the University of Michigan, Ben did his residency at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he became a Pediatric Neurosurgeon. Dr. Carson stayed at John Hopkins hospital for the rest of his distinguished career. He performed many groundbreaking surgical procedures; Dr. Carson was the first to successfully separate twins that were conjoined at the head. For this procedure, he was awarded the NAACP’s highest honor, the Spingarn Medal in 2006, and in 2008, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, by former president George Bush.
Ben Carson has a very strong stance on education calling it “the fundamental principle of American Success,” and “the the ladder that can lead one out of poverty and into realizing the American Dream.” He believes that America needs to reinvigorate its public school system and defeat the Common Core, calling it “a troubling trend of the US Department of Education.” Carson wants to give freedom back to the local communities to decide how they will educate their own children, instead of a government mandated curriculum. Carson further showed his dedication to education by opening the Carson Scholars program, which has given out 7500 scholarships since its foundation.
Ben Carson wants to implement a guest work program similar to the program in Canada. Migrant workers from other countries would be able to work legally in America for part of the year and then return back to their home country. He also wants to make citizenship more attainable to immigrants.
Ben is extremely pro life, and believes that the fetus is alive from conception. He would like to ban abortion for convenience, calling it “repugnant.” He would also ban abortion 20 weeks after fertilization, except in cases of rape, incest and endangering the mother.
Ben Carson fully supports medical marijuana but does not want it to become legalized for recreational use. In a Fox News interview, he said:
“Medical use of marijuana in compassionate cases has been proven to be useful, but recognize that marijuana is what is known as a gateway drug– a starter for people who move on to heavier duty drugs. I don’t think this is something we really want for our society.”
Ben Carson’s strict stance on marijuana is similar to his stance on alcohol. In his book, America, the Beautiful, Carson stated that he would like to lower the legal blood alcohol limit from .08 to .02, and have stricter punishments to eradicate drunk driving.
In an interview with CNN, Ben Carson stated that he thought that being gay is a choice, not genetic, citing prisons as proof. He said about prisons, “A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight–and when they come out, they’re gay.” In the same interview he held that he would leave LGBT issues up to each individual state, saying that he would follow the constitution because “the Constitution says civil issues of that nature should be determined at the state level.”
Ben Carson has shown some concern about the environment and wants to limit pollution. He says that it is the logical thing to do for both liberals and conservatives. In America, the Beautiful, he said:
“Protecting the environment is neither a Democratic nor a Republican position, but rather it should be a logical position for capitalists and socialists, because everyone should be looking out for the interests of future generations and trying to protect their own health as well.”
Ben Carson shows that he is a true conservative by taking a very strong stance with Israel, calling it on his website “our bulwark ally in the Middle East.” He has also said that the US and Israel have had a long relationship and we should always stand by them. On Russia, Ben has said that we and our NATO allies need to stand up to Russia; he referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as an “international bully. ” Dr. Carson believes that we should destroy the Islamic State or ISIS while it is in its “infant stages.” He said that he would consider all options, such as sanctions and even putting boots on the ground.
Carson has detailed that he wants to tackle the national debt aggressively and cut agencies such as Planned Parenthood. He would also like to simplify the US tax code by implementing a proportional tax, based on the Bible principle of “Tithing.” During the second GOP debate he stated: “There must be something inherently fair about […]Tithing. And that’s why I’ve advocated a proportional tax system. You make $10 billion, you pay a billion. You make $10, you pay one. And everybody gets treated the same way. And you get rid of the deductions, you get rid of all the loopholes.”
Additionally, Ben is staunchly against Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act. He called it a looming disaster and supports more patient choice and freedom. He once said, “More freedom and less government in our healthcare system will mean lower costs, more access, and continued innovation…”
